Permanent Makeup on the lips is the icing on the cake. The anatomy of the lips is truly an integral part of overall facial beauty. Permanent Makeup can create or contour the lips giving them a more youthful, pouty and sensual look. No more worrying about lipstick or lipliner smearing off. Yet you still have an option to use lipstick products if you want a more dramatic color for a night out, or you just want a different lip color for the day.

Do your lips lack color, volume or definition? Tattooing the lips is a great solution if you want to change the color, shape, size, or define your edges. Permanent Makeup enhances the beauty of the lips by not only enriching the lip color, but by adding the fullness.

When applied with a skilled hand, you can tattoo small lips or even no lips to make them appear larger. Depending on the color of pigment we select, they can be tattooed to look natural or like you have lipstick on. Color choices of pigments can be subtle or dramatic.

The famous part of the lip is the “Cupids bow.” The double curve of the human upper lip is said to resemble the bow of cupid, the Roman god of erotic love. Some lips are absent this feature and may look awkward. Injectable fillers for lip augmentation sometimes can change the shape of the cupids bow, and a pretty pout can quickly change into a duck bill if the filler is not distributed correctly.

The cupid bow sets the stage for the overall look. Volcano peaks and roller coaster peaks are not desirable when defining the cupids bow.” These shapes are not complementary and can give the lips an odd look. Also, if the cupid’s bow is too wide, it can give the appearance that you are smirking.

The “V” in the cupid’s bow must be properly outlined and designed for the shape of the face, nose and lips. A wide nose should have a wider spanned cupid’s bow. Less space between the lips and nose should take into consideration how high the peaks rise on the cupid’s bow.

The following should be taken into consideration when sculpting the lips and enhancing the cupid’s bow with Permanent Makeup lip tattoo:

  • Depth-between the peaks
  • Width-between the peaks
  • Bottom of the “V”
  • Top of the “V”
  • Width of the nose
  • Facial shape
  • Sharpness of the chin

Lips are not simple and should only be done by technicians who are experienced. They should have expert knowledge to help guide the client when choosing the size and shape of the new lip and to let them know what is and what is not possible. Furthermore, they should also be well versed in color theory to help choose the correct colors for their client’s undertones.

In addition, the right tattoo machine and needle selection makes all the difference in the world when tattooing lips. Defined lip liner, ink retention and smoothness in color all are affected by the tattoo equipment that will be used. Tattooing a straight line in the edge on the lip is not as simple as it looks. The edge of the lip has a lot of texture and certain needles do better than others when trying to create definition at the edge of the lips.

Lips are my favorite to do and I love making small lips bigger. I love reshaping the cupids bow! I love making dead lips look alive again! Most clients underestimate what a difference it can make and how natural the result can look.
